Discipline and Commitment
When we think about discipline, we usually think of the things that we should do because they are good for us - like exercise, and the little things we need to do to meet that deadline, and reading, and listening to informative newscasts, or watching documentaries that make us think and question. We think about the things that we need to do in order to fulfil a commitment.
What then, is the commitment (and promise to yourself) that you are making that requires discipline?
Often, we think of discipline as something that is a bit punishing (we push through the resistance to doing the task or activity we need to accomplish through discipline), but it's worth it because of the end result.
What is discipline to you?
Is it that you are doing something you would like to do, and making sure that you follow through with it?
Or is it doing something you don't want to do, but you know it is good for you, so you oblige yourself to do it anyway?
I always think of discipline through the lens of "being a disciple" to something (and I mean this in a secular context). If you are a disciple to something, you bring a sacredness to the actions that you take to fulfil your commitment to yourself or another. You bring in an aspect of dedicated studentship, a lens of always being the student...the one who seeks knowledge...the one who learns. You bring in this aspect of being committed to something and being disciplined to it (a disciple to it) while allowing a reverence for it. The energetic quality underlying the discipline then becomes one of joy, expansion, and motivation rather than punishment, diminution, and requiring yourself to struggle through something.
What are you committed to, and a disciple of?
LOVE : KINDNESS : COMPASSION :
YOUR HEALTH : YOUR WELLBEING :
YOUR PARTNER : YOUR CHILDREN :
YOUR WORK ?
The focus of this session is ‘discipline’ (in the sense of being a disciple to something), and commitment. We explore how making discipline and commitment sacred can help deepen your practice and bring a quality of reverence and joy to everything that you do.
